Are your beliefs empowering or limiting you?
Sep 15, 2021By the age of 7, most of our beliefs are formed. Can you believe that? Yep, 7 years old. The period from where we are born until we are 7 is called the "Imprinting" phase. This is the time when we are like sponges absorbing unconsciously all of the information from our family, teachers, friends, and anyone close to us!
At this age, we don't know how to consciously discern from what is empowering or limiting, so we believe it all! As adults, we start developing our aspirations, ambitions, and goals through the lens of the beliefs of our 7-year-old self. It all happens unconsciously and a lot of times we are not aware of them until we start educating ourselves about how our mind works.
An empowering belief focuses on the possibilities, it recognizes that you have the "creator rights" of your own reality. It allows you to be responsible for your actions and to recognize that the power of changing a situation - or the perspective of it - is in your hands. Examples of empowering beliefs are: "I can learn a new skill at any age", "I can pursue my dreams and live on purpose", "I can be myself and be successful".
A limiting belief focuses on your limitations. It portrays you as being powerless and it assumes that life is happening to you, that you are the victim of reality. Examples of limiting beliefs are: "I am too old to learn a new skill", "I don't have time to take care of myself", "I can't speak my truth".
I know you are reading this because you want to reach your highest potential while being your authentic self. Having awareness of your limiting beliefs and replacing them with empowering ones is critical to achieving this desired outcome. A limiting belief is like a dead end, it caps your potential. On the opposite end, an empowering belief gives you options for you to explore and define what is right for you.
How can you become more aware of your limiting beliefs? How can you replace these with empowering ones?
I offer you below practical and proven techniques that will help you reprogram those beliefs that may be limiting you:
- Meditation - Meditating every day for at least 5 mins will help you to gradually increase your awareness and subsequently reset some of those limiting beliefs. Because these beliefs live in our unconscious, a lot of times we are not even aware of them. Practicing meditation enables you to allow space to listen at your own input, increasing your awareness level, and therefore your ability to reprogram your own mind.
- Question Everything - Do not believe everything you think or anything you hear from yourself or others. Be curious and ask questions. For example, if you find yourself saying: "I can't do this", ask yourself: How do I know that I can't do this? Has there ever a time that I have done something like this? Has anyone else done something like this? Because if they can, so can I.
- Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) - NLP is utilizing the language of the mind to overcome our deepest unconscious programming. I have been certified as a Master Practitioner Level, Integrative NLP Coach, and Trainer of NLP. I utilize these techniques in my coaching practice to help my clients overcome limiting beliefs at the unconscious level, even those that may have happened early in their lives.
