Happy new year. It's 2022. We made it. I cannot believe we are in 2022. Time flew by. 2021, when I think about it, it was a year of a lot of growth for me, a year full of highlights, also a year full of lessons and challenges, but maybe I'll do another episode about that. This episode is all about your intention for 2022. This intention is important because I want you to find and own your voice.
When I say your voice, I want you to start creating your own story on your terms. I want you to start finding and owning your purpose and direction. You can be who you want to be. Do what you're meant to do. Have the things you deserve to have, like I always say in the intro of the show. That starts with knowing more about yourself. I guarantee you.
Two moments in my life have been the most fulfilling ones. The first one was to be able to provide financially for my mother and give back to my family in Cuba. The second one was aligning my career to my purpose and helping others do the same. The second one has been very important in my life because I've realized that the more you learn about yourself and the more of a direction you have, the more you start aligning your life path and career path to that direction.
The more you start aligning to that direction, the more fulfillment you start feeling inside you. The more internal fulfillment you start feeling. The more internal fulfillment you start feeling, the more you start thriving. I always tell my clients, “The more you thrive, the more you align.” The show is all about that specific intention of aligning with your purpose in 2022.
The more you thrive, the more you align.
When we think of our jobs and careers, we spend 1/3 of our lifetimes in our jobs. Why not make that a fulfilling process? Why not make that a process that we fully enjoy? We are learning and growing. We don't have to be miserable or even not enjoy what we do every single day for lots of hours. Sometimes we are in our comfort zone and sometimes, in that comfort zone, we are uncomfortable.
Has that happened to you? I’m in your comfort zone. I feel great and easy, but I’m not comfortable. I feel like I want to expand, grow and go out of that comfort zone. I can truly feel that I'm making an impact on myself and others. I felt like that several times. Even when I was drawing in that comfort zone, I felt that there was something bigger for me out there that I needed to explore and stretch myself.
If you're feeling uncomfortable in that comfort zone, why not be uncomfortable outside of that comfort zone where you're stretching and growing? I want you to think about that because sometimes we start getting complacent within that comfort zone, even though we are not comfortable anymore. I want you in 2022 to truly stop playing small and decide to stretch yourself, whatever the means to you.
I don't mean to leave your job and start your dream career when I say that. What I mean is start gaining clarity on who you are, who you want to be, what your direction and purpose are. Why wait longer? One of the quotes that Buddha says is, “The problem is that we think we have time.” 2021 was challenging for me because I lost three people that were close to me. Two of them were family members. One of them was a role model of my life, my uncle. I am a coach. I know meditating, basic programming and reading books because of him.
He made such an impact in my life and he passed away in 2021 because of cancer. That was such an awakening moment because I realized how fragile and temporary life is. The fact that sometimes we delay our dreams or ourselves gaining clarity, thinking that we have time, but the only time we have is right now and our present moment. Why not start growing right now?
The third person that I didn't mention before was Cody's dad. He passed away unfortunately from COVID. Those were three losses in 2021 that truly made me reflect on life. I want you to think of that because sometimes we think we have a long time. We don't know. I want you to start acting right now. Why? I want you to be happy and fulfilled. I truly want you to grow and stretch yourself because when that moment comes that we are looking back in our lives, I strive and my clients to not look back and wish that something else could have happened. I want you to reflect on that at the beginning of 2022.
For that, I'm going to provide you with four steps framework. My background is engineering, even though I’m a coach. I want to give you actionable step-by-step frameworks that you can apply after you finish reading this episode. I'm going to explain each one of these. The first one is direction. The second one is prioritization. The third one is the focus and the fourth one is accountability.
The first one is direction. It’s something that I truly love and has worked amazingly. For me, it’s setting a theme for the year. For example, in 2021, it was all levels establishing the foundation of my business, creating a business that long-term is sustainable, even if the short-term is going to be challenging. I have that long-term vision when creating my coaching, speaking, and training business.
In 2022, my theme is more about focusing on a few things, doing them well and surrendering. Surrendering is something I'm truly working on because there are many things we don't have control of. The only thing we have control of is our mindset, work, and effort. Everything else falls outside of our control, so we got to trust. I'm working on that trust and surrendering a piece of the equation. I want you to look at 2022. What is the theme for you? What is a theme based on who you are right now and who you want to be? What is that focus area? What is that theme?
The second piece, based on that theme, what is the one thing? I want you to commit to one thing, Not doing all three. I don't want you to be overwhelmed. What is the one thing you commit to doing to align more with the person you want to become? For me, it’s launching my digital course. Based on my theme of focusing on a few things and doing them well is my one thing. That's prioritization. We go our direction, which is a theme. Prioritization is the one thing you're going to do and accomplish in 2022.
What is the theme based on who you are right now and who you want to be? Really focus on that next year.
The third one is the focus. Focus, in this case, is all about having a visual reminder that reminds you every single day of that theme and that one thing. For me, it has been a vision board. If you walk into my office, one of the first things you will see is my vision board and my planning and participation space. Those are the two main things that are on my walls, other than art. You can create a vision board and a huge sticky note on your computer. The method depends on you, but I want you to create this visual reminder that you see every day because it will happen.
When you put the intention out there, you prioritize, work towards that and focus. Meaning it's in your mind all the time. If you're focused on that direction, I promise and I've seen that one million times that it’s going to happen. We covered direction, prioritization and focus. The fourth one is important, which is accountability. Sometimes we need that little push to get to where we want to be.
Accountability is all about having someone, maybe more people, like an accountability group or even social media. Having someone that is going to maintain you accountable for the goals and promises you're making to yourself, particularly when you invest in this one thing, it’s going to have the highest return on investment.
I have one accountability partner and one accountability group. I've found that immensely helpful. One of them is for my digital course, the one I'm creating and the other one is for my general goals that I have every week, other than my planning and prioritization process that I follow every Sunday or Monday morning.
I want to read you something that I found in regards to accountability so you can see the power of this with facts. When people know they're being held accountable by others for their actions, they will work harder. That's why in jobs, we have supervisors because we work harder when we're being accountable for our actions.
Research shows that they have around a 65% chance of success when someone shares their goals. However, having a specific accountability partner boost that chance to 95%. I love this because I've truly seen it on myself and others. Even though I coach my clients, coaching is accountability because coaching is all moving forward. I'm bridging the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It’s very future-oriented for you to get there.
I read the social media piece so I remember when I was doing my 100 days meditation challenge. I posted on social media and was like, “For 100 days straight, I'm going to meditate for 60 minutes every day.” Sometimes it was 20 or 5 if I don't have time, but I'm going to make it every single day. After I meditate, I'm going to post a video describing the insights that I got. Every single day in my Instagram account, you'll find a video for 100 days straight. Social media was a thing that kept me accountable. I said, “I wasn't going to do that.” Integrity says, “Have a very big piece of who I am.” I did for 100 days, 100 videos. You can check it on social media.
That was super powerful. I don't necessarily have that, but I have accountability partners. When you share your goals with someone, one thing is to share with someone you trust. It is such a huge help because you have that other person that keeps you accountable. You have the four steps. This is what you want to do after this episode. Direction, what is your theme for 2022? I want you to choose a theme. Mine is focused on a few things, master them and surrender. That was my sequence, theme and focus area for 2022. It can be very specific and a little bit high level like mine. It depends. Mine is business-focused.
The second one is based on that theme. What is the one thing you're going to focus on and achieve in 2022? The third one is to create a visual reminder of that one thing of your theme. You have it in front of you every single day so it helps you focus on what you want to achieve. The last one is accountability. Taking action is an important piece of this. You define your direction. Getting there takes energy and effort and having an accountability partner will help you get there.
If you think, “Yanet, I got those four elements. I know who I'm going to reach out to. I have my theme and my one thing. I'm going to be on my visual reminder. I need to get better with time management,” I want you to check out one of my previous episodes all about Time Management Techniques. It’s the one I utilize and the one I recommend to all my clients. If time management is an issue for you, I want you to check out that episode. Happy 2022. I wish you a happy process of finding that voice and owning that voice in 2022.
